Nobuyoshi Araki
1940 -
Born in Tokyo.He is one of Japan's leading photographers, consistently presenting works on the themes of life/sex (eros), death (thanatos), and impermanence. Although he started his career as a commercial photographer for the advertising agency Dentsu in 1963, he held solo exhibitions during his tenure and also published private edition photo books. The photo book "Sentimental Journey", which was published in 1971 and recorded his honeymoon, was a declaration of determination as a photographer, and a declaration of war that rebelled against existing photographic expressions.Since then, with the advocacy of ``Shisha (a style of photographic expression that came to be called after the ``I novel'' in literature), in which the photographer establishes a close relationship with the subject, he explores personal life, everyday life in Tokyo, and sexual scenes. He has captured the beauty of all kinds of subjects, such as "story photos" consisting of a series of composite photos, or sensational depictions of people reminiscent of shunga from the Edo period, flowers, food, and skyscapes.
